Gray-level response

St. Louis, February 12, 2004
– Westar enables automated
measurement of gray-level
response time (GLRT),
allowing LCD manufacturers
and integrators to improve
flat-screen television
performance.
Westar’s product manager for
GLRT products, Mike Wilson
says “With the growing use
of AMLCDs in flat screen
televisions there is a keen
interest among LCD
manufacturers and
integrators in motion video
performance. One of the key
LCD short-comings
manufacturers are addressing
is LCD response time. Slow
response time leads to
blurring of moving objects
and degraded video
performance. In the past,
LCD manufacturers and
integrators have specified
response time as the
transition time from black
to white and white to black.
We now know that this does
not fully address the real
performance of the LCD
panel. The response time
between gray-levels can be
10 times longer than the
black and white response
times.”
Westar has introduced two
solutions for measuring
gray-level response time: a
stand-alone GLRT measurement
package, and GLRT options
for users of our FPM
(Flat-panel Performance
Measurement) systems. Both
approaches provide complete
solutions for GLRT
measurement and include
Westar’s T-Drive™ for video
pattern generation, TRD-100A
light measuring device, and
GLRT software that perform
the measurement.
Westar’s GLRT measurement
solutions provide rapid,
automated, measurement of
response time between all
selected combinations of
gray levels. In most cases
response times of single
gray-shade transitions can
be measured. This
measurement capability is
beneficial to LCD panel
manufacturers to
characterize their panels
and by panel integrators to
aide in the development of
over-drive electronics to
enhance LCD response time.
