How do Spectroradiometers measure light?

Unlike color filter colorimeters which use optical filters to measure CIE tri-stimulus values (X,Y,Z), spectroradiometers use a diffraction grating, relay optics, and a CCD sensor to measure the sampled light dispersed by wavelength.

The visible band “rainbow” of light falling on the sensor is converted to electrical signals which are captured, corrected, processed, and reported as an array of radiance values and derived colorimetric results.

The CIE XYZ values are computed from the full array of spectral data using precision math functions (standard tri-stimulus integrals) prescribed by the CIE.
